Before 2001, there was no environment related NGO in Chandannagar, to take up environmental issues, specially the local pollution problems arising as an outcome of fast rising population and changing life style. Though the civic administration was still better than many other similar towns of the state, much was yet to be done for further improvements. The creation of an NGO to deal with such issues was the right answer at the moment.
Some environmental conscious people took the first initiative to set up an NGO in Chandnanagar to bring in focus the local environmental problems and to draw attention of the corporation and the Administration by involving the local citizens through this NGO. Accordingly the gathered some similar minded people and organized a public meeting on 1st April, 2001 which was an instant success and it was resolved unanimously to form the NGO on that very day. Thus the Chandannagar Paribesh Unnayan Samity was form on 1st April, 2001. The samity received tremendous public response and support, soon hereafter, samity got duty registered under West Bengal societies Registration Act. The first executive Committee was elected with Sri T.K. Banerjee as President and Sri K.N.Sanyal as Secretary and 19 other members in the committee. As there was no office accommodation of its own at this time, the secretary’s residence continued to be use as office room till 15th August, 2006 when the office of the Samity was shifted to its own premises at the present address. The present membership of the samity numbers to about 400 inclusive of both life and general members.
